Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Naaykens and Thoreson Find the Net in 6-2 Loss Versus Harvard

The Saints held a 2-1 lead after the first thanks to goals from Ty Naaykens and Gunnar Thoreson, but a big second period for the Crimson sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 6-2 loss on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence fell to 8-19-2 with the loss and 4-11-2 in league play, while Harvard improved to 9-13-2 and 7-8-2 in ECAC play.

The game started slowly on both sides with the teams not able to generate much offense.

That would change as the Crimson were tagged with a penalty at the 9:06 mark of the first. The Scarlet and Brown wasted little time making the road team pay scoring 38 seconds into the man-advantage. Greg Lapointe and Felikss Gavars combined to find Naaykens in front of the net where the pass deflected off his skate and past Ben Charette to take the 1-0 lead.

The Crimson found an equalizer at the 13:58 mark when Casey Severo finished off a Joe Miller feed in front of Dominic Basse.

Late in the frame, the Saints regained their lead at 2-1 with a minute and eight seconds remaining. Cayden Casey carried the puck from the left side around the back of the net and centered a pass to Tyler Cristall, who jammed away. The junior's second shot redirected off the stick of Thoreson and in to give St. Lawrence the lead going into the intermission.

The contest flipped on its head in the second period where Harvard got a pair of goals from Ben MacDonald and Cam Johnson a minute and nine seconds apart to take their first lead of the game at 3-2.

The Crimson scored their third goal of the period at the 17:14 mark off a Ryan Healey shot to double their lead. St. Lawrence made a good push to end the second period with five shot attempts but couldn't get any closer as the game moved into the second intermission.

After killing an early penalty, the Scarlet and Brown went on another power play ahead of the TV timeout, but shots from Isaac Tremblay and Cristall were stymied by Charette.

Instead, Harvard took a three-goal lead at the 13:52 mark off a Severo power play tally to make it 3-2. They would tack on an empty-netter late to further put the game out of reach.

Basse finished the night with 28 saves in goal, while Charette made 27 in the road net. Both sides went 1-for-3 on the power play for the night in special teams play.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back on the ice tomorrow night when the team hosts Dartmouth in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
