Down 2-1 late in the contest,
Gunnar Thoreson scored an extra-attacker goal for the Saints to send the game to overtime where
Greg Lapointe scored the game-winner as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey came from behind to defeat Dartmouth 3-2 on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence improved to 9-19-2 with the win and 5-11-2 in ECAC action, while the Big Green fell to 12-11-1 and 9-8-1 in league play.
The game started fast and furious as three goals were scored in the game's opening 3:07. The Saints found the scoreboard first just a minute and seven seconds into the contest when
Mason Waite got the puck to Thoreson. The sophomore centered a pass to
Jan Olenginski, who beat Roan Clarke to take the 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth wasted little time getting a goal a minute and 20 seconds later when Nate Morgan found the net through heavy traffic. CJ Foley followed his teammate with a tally less than a minute to make it 2-1 after a tumultuous three minutes and change.
Things would settle down thereafter as both coaching staffs made defensive adjustments. The second half of the first saw numerous penalties with the Saints and Big Green both getting man-advantages. After coming up empty on the power play, the Saints were tasked with a 5-on-3 kill to end the period and passed the challenge with flying colors to keep the game at 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Special teams continued to mar the game in the second as the Saints had three chances on the power play, and Dartmouth had one of their own. Both teams came up empty once again as the game stayed at 2-1.
St. Lawrence looked as if they were going to have a five-minute power play in the frame, but video replay reversed the call, and the game went into the second intermission.
Both squads continued their push in the third period offensively but neither team gave up much despite more power play time for both sides.
In the final minute of regulation, the Saints pulled
Mason Kucenski for an extra-attacker and found the goal they needed.
Cayden Casey started the play and found
Felikss Gavars in the offensive zone, who fed a perfect pass to Thoreson. The sophomore forward snapped a shot five-hole on Clarke to tie the game at 2-2 with 34 seconds to go.
The contest went to overtime where the Skating Saints dominated possession and got the first four shots on frame. Kucenski faced his first shot of the overtime and saw his save rim around to
Drake Burgin, who skipped an outlet pass to Lapointe, who went in 2-on-1 with
Tyler Cristall. The senior faked a pass and ripped a shot past the goaltender to take the 3-2 comeback win.
Kucenski, who had an assist on the game-winner, made 19 saves in the win, while Clarke came up with 26 of the 29 he faced.
The special team's dust settled with both penalty kill units going perfect with St. Lawrence at 4-for-4, and the Big Green at 5-for-5.
The Skating Saints will head to the road next weekend for the final road trip of the regular season. The team will head to Colgate on February 21 before heading to Ithaca for a 6 p.m. matchup at Cornell. Â
