Season Preview: Baseball Opens Their 2025 Campaign Against Westfield St.

The St. Lawrence University baseball team is set to begin its 2025 season this weekend when the team travels to Ramsey, N.J. to take on Westfield State University in a doubleheader at Don Bosco Prep on Saturday, March 1. The Saints are looking for a strong start to their season as they look to make it back into the playoffs under head coach Kenny Collins, who enters his fifth year at the program's helm.

The Scarlet and Brown finished the 2024 campaign 13-19 overall and posted a 7-10 divisional mark in the Liberty League, which left them one game short of the playoffs, fueling their hopes for a berth this season.

Collins and the Saints' roster has 37 returning players and 11 first-years to fill out the roster. Among the returners are eight of the team's ten best batting averages from last year along with 223.2 of the team's 251.1 innings pitched from a season ago.

Back for his senior campaign and leading the Saints' rotation is Michael Hutchins, who was named to the All-Liberty League second team in his junior year as the ace for the Saints. The hurler started eight games and posted a 2-2 record pitching 42.1 innings. In those 42.1 innings, Hutchins had a 3.61 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, allowed a .253 batting average in his 166 at-bats, and struck out a team-high 44 batters.

In the batter's box and the field, the Scarlet and Brown return significant contributors. Timothy Connor will man first base for St. Lawrence once again after leading qualified batters in batting average (.364), OPS (1.031), runs (31), total bases (58), and on-base percentage (.489). Batting around Connor will be Brett Federico, who is back for a graduate year, along with John Gannon, both of whom batted above .300 last season.

Federico averaged .304 from the top of the order during his senior year and produced a team-high ten doubles, and three triples, to go along with 28 runs and 13 RBI. Gannon produced a .301 average from his spot in the lineup card in 2024 and led the team with five home runs, and 29 RBI in clean-up work.

From the Class of 2025, St. Lawrence also returns Daniel Verrastro, Sean Desjardins, Brenden O'Neil, Sam Fosberg, Brendan Karadenes, Mike DiStefano, Christian Mingione, John Igoe, Jared Brenner, Thomas Woods, and Evan Burke.

In the junior class, Gannon is joined by John Donnellan, Eoin Morrissey, Willie Landman, Owen McClintock, Max Cloutier, James Morr, JJ Humenay, Michael Flyzik, Danny Collins, Joshua Polumbo, and Noah Spaulding.

Rounding out the returners are sophomores, Jack Finnegan, Kyle Baudouin, Nolan Widrick, David Zuhlsdorf, Liam Hickey, Gabe Albertson, Finn Parker, Matt Davis, Mike Siano, Boden Driscoll, and Will Mueller.

Collins and the Saints welcome 11 new players into the fold all of which will look to work their way into an experienced lineup. Joining the ranks are first-year pitchers, Shota Kubota, Joe LaPrade, Ryan McCausland, Brendan Young, Owen Gray, and Lukas Sharrock, along with position players, Ethan Harris, Eddie Morrissey, Jack Growney, Jake Towey, and London Hudson.

Following the opening weekend, the Saints will head to Purchase for another doubleheader before heading south for their Spring Break trip in Orlando, Florida. St. Lawrence will play four doubleheaders down south before heading to Ithaca on March 21-22 for their Liberty league opener.

Another three-game weekend on the road at RIT will give way to the team's home opener on April 4 when the team welcomes Rochester to Tom Fay Field for a three-game set. The Saints will dip their toes out of league play to host Trinity at home on April 11-12 before heading to Poughkeepsie for a pair against Vassar.

St. Lawrence will play two more three-game series against Hobart and Clarkson the rest of the way, while sprinkling in non-conference contests against Castleton, Plattsburgh, and SUNY Canton.
