Mahoney Nets Career Best; No. 12 Saints Edge No. 15 St. John Fisher, 11-9

Daniel Mahoney recorded a career-high five goals to help lead the No. 12 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 11-9 win over No. 15 St. John Fisher on Thursday afternoon at Hantz Field in Potsdam, N.Y.

Following Mahoney, Jamie Rosenzweig tallied a goal and an assist, while Ted Wilson, Cam Croasdaile, Bobby Wells, Padraic Condon and Asa Beach also scored for the Saints. Condon also picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Charlie Miele led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

St. Lawrence started things off, as Beach made a run and tallied his first goal of the season. Croasdaile added the second for the Saints, but the Cardinals scored three straight to take the lead themselves. SLU responded with four unanswered, and after a last second Cardinal goal, the Saints led 6-4 after the first 15 minutes of play.

St. John Fisher tied things up with two goals to start the second, but Mahoney scored at 7:39 of the second to give the Saints a 7-6 edge at the break.

The Saints outscored the Cardinals 3-1 in the third quarter with goals from Wells, Mahoney and Rosenzweig, putting the Saints up 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals tallied two of their four man-up goals at 13:13 and 2:44 of the third to bring the game back within one, but Mahoney notched an insurance goal for the Saints with 1:30 to play and the defense locked down to hold the Cardinals scoreless as the clock expired.

"First I want to thank Ben Gaebel and the Clarkson staff for being great neighbors to get the game played," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I am so impressed with the determination and resiliency of the team against a very good opponent to find a way today."

"We will keep finding ways to get better as the season goes along, but this grit and hard work displayed will serve us well throughout the year," Mahoney added. 



Colin Blakeslee and Garrett Sutton each recorded two goals for the Cardinals, while Mason Brady added three assists. Jack Cornell picked up a team-best six ground balls and cause two turnovers.

Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello made 10 saves and picked up three ground balls, while Tyler Manning finished with eight saves for the Cardinals. Y

St. Lawrence outshot St. John Fisher 33-28, but both teams finished with 19 shots on goal. The Cardinals held a slight 25-23 advantage in ground balls and went 4-for-6 on the man-up.

The win moved the Saints to 2-0 on the season, while SJF fell to 2-1 with their first loss.

The Saints are scheduled to make up their game from last weekend at Cortland on Wednesday, March 5 at 3:30 p.m.
