Saints Suffer Loss to St. John Fisher in Season Opener

Jessica LaPlaca scored two goals, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team opened the 2025 season with a 14-3 loss to St. John Fisher on Wednesday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

LaPlaca led the Saints with two goals, while Phoebe Spaeth netted the third. Ellie Camp finished with the lone assist, while Neve Ley picked up a team-best four ground balls. Both Brigette Gable and Kelsey O'Brien each caused two turnovers.

Camp fed LaPlaca to put the Scarlet and Brown on the board first, but the Cardinals responded with a pair of unanswered goals about a minute and a half apart to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter, which they held onto after the first 15 minutes of play.

St. John Fisher shutout the Saints 4-0 in the second quarter to build a 6-1 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals opened the third quarter with three goals, pushing their lead to 9-1 with three minutes to play in the third. With 1:05 to play, Spaeth scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot, making it 9-2.

LaPlaca kicked off scoring in the fourth quarter with her second of the game, bringing the score to 10-3. Sydney Carpenter netted a pair of goals, while Emma Biel and Kaley Griffin also scored to finish off the game with a 14-3 final.

"St. John Fisher is a good team and they played us tough," said head coach Tom Ryan. "We played hard but it definitely felt like an early season game and we obviously still have some things to work on. Zoe stood tall in net and had some impressive saves in front of a defensive unit that held their own. Jess and Phoebe stood out offensively and in the middle of the field."

Biel led the Cardinals with five goals, while Carpenter finished with three goals, three assists, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Zoe Froimovitz stopped seven shots, while Maggie Cross made two for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals scored two women-up goals and outshot the Saints 26-9. They also held a 22-10 advantage in ground balls.

St. Lawrence fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss, while St. John Fisher moved to 2-0.

The Saints will host SUNY Geneseo in their home opener on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
