Six different Saints scored, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team fought off a late comeback attempt and picked up a 13-10 victory over SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening to grab their first win of the season.
The win also marked the first career win for head coach
Tom Ryan, as the Saints are now 1-1 on the season, while SUNY Canton fell to 1-2.
Sophomore
Jessica LaPlaca led the way with four goals and an assist, fellow sophomore
Kelsey Roth and senior
Neve Ley recorded a hat trick each. Junior
Ashley Mudd, and first-years
Read Roy, and
Cate Rathnam all scored a goal each. Senior
Ella Brown recorded a team best three caused turnovers, while junior
Kelsey O'Brien and senior
Ellie Camp picked up four ground balls.
In the first quarter, the Saints got on the board quick. Roy was assisted by junior
Caroline Hamilton in scoring her first goal of the season. Canton answered right back with a goal of their own 30 seconds later to tie the game up at one. After that it was all Saints, as they scored four unanswered goals, including two from LaPlaca to go up 5-1 to end the first quarter of play.
Using the momentum they built in the previous quarter, the Saints ramped up the pressure. They shut out the Roos 5-0 in the second as a result of two goals from LaPlaca, and a goal each from Ley, to extend their lead to nine. By the end of the first half, the Saints held a 10-1 lead over SUNY Canton.
The third remained scoreless until Rathnam put in a goal with 6:43 left in the quarter to give the Saints a 10-point lead. Maddy Caron ended the Roos' scoring drought to cut the lead back down to nine, but Roth answered back with a free-position goal to keep the 10-goal advantage at the end of the third.
The Roos made a comeback in the final quarter of play, with Lindsey Wunder kicking things off by scoring a goal a minute and 30 seconds into the fourth. SUNY Canton then added seven more unanswered goals to make it a 12-9 game with just 4:20 left to play. The Saints finally answered back with Ley putting in a goal three minutes later to bring the Saints lead back up to four. Canton did not go down easy as Caron put in her third goal to bring the game back to within three with a minute left, yet the Saints managed to hang on as they picked up the 13-10 victory for their first of the season.
"I give Canton credit they played hard and never gave up," said Ryan. "Jess L. had another good game and shot the ball well. Neve dodged with authority and finished her chances. On the defensive end, Suzy L. drew the toughest assignment and rose to the occasion. Zoey F. was once again impressive in goal."
First-year
Zoe Froimovitz recorded eight saves on the day, as the Saints held the edge over the Roos in shots (28-25), shots on goal (23-19), and ground balls (28-21).
The Saints will look to build a win streak, as they are scheduled to face SUNY Brockport at SUNY Canton on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
