Jackie Malley caught a hot hand, going 5-for-7 beyond the arc en route to 17 points and the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team knocked off the RPI Engineers 62-40 to cap off the regular season Saturday afternoon at the Mueller Center in Troy, N.Y.
The Saints will head into the playoffs with wins in six of their last nine games, and a 16-9 overall mark with a 10-8 Liberty League record. They finish tied with Union record-wise, although with two wins over the Garnet Chargers, St. Lawrence earns the five seed and Union gets the six.
"Really nice job to bounce back from a tough loss yesterday and play well today," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger. "We did a great job defensively all game, had very few breakdowns and forced many turnovers and tough shots. Offensively, we made extra passes today and found open teammates for good looks, especially in the second half when we made some nice adjustments in our offense. Now we get ready for a really tough playoff game on the road."
The Saints connected on five of their first six field goals and got up early 10-0 not four minutes into the game. RPI was able to get the offense going and after scoring the last five points of the quarter, the Saints lead was cut down to 18-12.
During the second quarter, neither team was able to go on a long scoring stretch and the St. Lawrence lead was between six and nine points.
Annie Perry had five points late in the quarter and the Saints took a 30-22 lead into halftime with Flynn leading the squad with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Scarlet and Brown really got going in the second half, initially starting the third quarter with an 11-2 run with two threes from Malley and one from
Norah Niesz to take a 41-24 lead halfway through the third. The Saints then ended the quarter on a 10-2 run with Malley adding another triple to bring her total to 17 and the St. Lawrence lead was up to 51-28. They outscored the Engineers 21-6 in the quarter with 5-for-7 three point shooting.
With 6:07 left in the game, a layup by
Izzy Caron got the score to 61-33, which turned out to be the largest lead of the game. Neither team scored much for the quarter, but the Saints finished the regular season with a strong showing in Troy.
Flynn had all nine of her points in the second half and also had 10 rebounds and three assists. Niesz had seven points and three assists and 10 different players got into the scoring column for the Saints. The Saints were 10-for-19 from the three point line, had 16 assists, and forced 19 turnovers from the Engineers.
The Saints will head right back on the road for playoffs, Tuesday night, February 25 for a win-or-go-home matchup.
