Six different Saints scored as the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team defeated Harvard 6-2 in their final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.
With the win, the Saints closed the regular season at 19-10-5 overall and 13-6-3Â in ECAC play, while Harvard fell to 2-24-2 and 1-20-1.
Harvard's Zoe Boosamra got things started, as she gave the Crimson the 1-0 lead at 13:11 of the first.
Kiley Mastel helped the Saints rebound just about two minutes later and was the first to score for the Saints.
Kristina Bahl pulled the puck off the boards and Mastel sent a rocket from the left faceoff circle to make it 1-1.
After the first 20 minutes of play, St. Lawrence led 16-8 in shots on goal.
Scoring opened up in the second, as the Scarlet and Brown saw goals from
Abby Hustler,
Tori Verbeek and
Kennedy Wilson.
Hustler made it 2-1 as she skated into the Crimson zone and went top left corner, beating the blocker of Emily Davidson.
Verbeek then made it 3-1, as a shot from Mastel rang the crossbar, Verbeek was on the doorstep and went backhanded with the rebound. Hustler snagged her second point with an assist to Wilson, as she set Wilson up with a pass from behind the goal line for the 4-1 lead.
St. Lawrence tacked on three unanswered goals in the second for the 4-1 lead and also led 25-20 in shots on goal.
Sarah Marchand tacked on the fifth goal for the Saints, as she skated in from left hand side, and flipped the backhander over the glove of Davidson.
The Saints' high-powered offense continued as
Gemma DiMento secured the puck in the corner and sent a beautiful pass into the slot for
Anna Segedi. Segedi beat Davidson high on the blocker side and DiMento tallied her first collegiate point in Scarlet and Brown with the assist.
Nearing the 10 minute mark of the third, head coach
Chris Wells put
Ella Willoughby in goal for her first time as a first year.
With 5:06 to play, Harvard added their second of the game, as Willoughby made the initial save, but Emily Hamann capitalized on the rebound.
"The ones that didn't go in last night found their way in tonight," said Wells. "What a great turnout of alumni and fans for our team today! It's what makes SLU the special place it is."
"We had lots of action as the game was up and down. Emma had to be sharp as Harvard had numerous line rushes to counter our chances. We made some very nice plays and finished on some goals as we went hard to the net. Everyone was excited for Gemma getting on the score sheet today. A great moment that we will all remember."
Emma-Sofie Nordström made 27 saves for the Saints, while Willoughby finished with three and Davidson finished with 32 for Harvard.
St. Lawrence finished with a 38-32 edge in shots on goal, while neither team capitalized on the power play.
The Saints have earned the third seed in the ECAC playoffs and a bye in the first-round next weekend. They also secured home ice in the quarterfinals and will await their opponent following next weekend's games. The best-of-three quarterfinal series will begin on February 28 and all games will be at 2 p.m.
