Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Nunnally

Flynn Posts 18 Points; Saints Battle Hard in Loss at Vassar

Sophomore Elizabeth Flynn had 18 points, and a second-half push was not enough for the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, as they fell 77-58 to Vassar on the back of strong Brewers' individual performances Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

With the defeat, St. Lawrence is now back at .500 in conference play, holding a record of 6-6. Their overall record stands at 12-7.

"We ran into a buzz saw today, a three-headed monster named Gelb, McDermed, and Harvey," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "I thought we played much more focused and had greater effort in the second half. We lost our discipline in the second quarter when they went on their run, got out of our game plan, then it snowballed. We need to do a better job of maintaining constant accountability, coaches too, so we can develop the discipline that we need to compete against teams like this."

The game started off back and forth in the first quarter with both teams trading buckets back and forth with each other. St. Lawrence was able to get a 14-9 lead after a three pointer from junior Hannah Van Dyke with four minutes left. Vassar answered right back however and the quarter ended 16-16.

The second quarter started off with Flynn knocking down two free throws. For the rest of the quarter, Vassar ramped up the pressure as they went on a 25-4 run to give them a big lead. By the end of the first half. Vassar had a 46-25 lead over the Saints.

For the third quarter, Vassar was able to hold their lead for most of the quarter and even extending their lead up to 24 points at a point. The Saints began to chip away at the lead however and after a layup by Flynn the lead was cut down to 16, with the third quarter ending 57-41 in favor of Vassar.

In the fourth and final quarter, the Saints fought to get back in the game cutting the lead down to 13 with 6:44 left to go in the quarter. However, this was not enough as Vassar was able to hold their lead and finish the game with the 77-58 win.

Flynn added six rebounds and three steals. Along with her was junior Mason Baker-Schlendering with 11 points and eight rebounds. Vassar shot 55.6 per cent from the field and 63.6 per cent from three, while the Saints shot 33.3% from the field and 16.7% from three.

The Saints will look to bounce back on Friday, February 7, when the take on RIT Friday night at home in Canton, N.Y.
