Malley Leads Fourth-Quarter Comeback; Saints Record Five-Point Win at Rensselaer

Jackie Malley recorded 21 points and Hannah Van Dyke picked up 12 boards, leading to a crucial comeback win for the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team in league play. Their 23 fourth quarter points led them to a five-point victory over Rensselaer on Saturday in Troy, N.Y.

The road victory improves the Saints' record to 5-2 with the win, and 1-1 in conference play heading home for a midweek non-conference matchup prior to the break.

"That was a gutsy win playing shorthanded on the second half of a back-to-back," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "We searched for a lineup that could defend and rebound, and finally found it in the fourth quarter."

The Saints only outscored the Engineers in the last two quarters of the game. They found themselves down at halftime after home Engineers powered some offensive runs in the opening quarter. A Norah Niesz three-pointer put the Saints up 5-2 early but that was their largest lead of the first half as they found themselves down by six at the break.

After RPI extended their lead to eight via two drained free throws, Malley knocked down jumpers on back to back possessions to cut the lead in half. The teams traded points from that point on, with more offense from Malley and a Stevie Bannon jumper reducing the St. Lawrence deficit to two with 3:42 remaining in the third.

The Engineers worked their lead back up to eight, but Annie Perry drilled a buzzer-beating three to cut the deficit to five, setting up more St. Lawrence momentum heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

In the fourth, fouls sent Malley and Van Dyke, and Stevie Bannon to the line, and they went 6-6 cutting the lead to one. Following that, a Niesz jump shot from close range gave the Scarlet and Brown their first lead, 63-62, since the game's opening quarter with 6:36 remaining.

Sydney Blaney re-took the lead moments later for RPI, then St. Lawrence's Van Dyke hit a foul shot to tie it again and Niesz hit a massive three to pull the Saints ahead by three points at 5:14. Van Dyke's layup a minute later provided the Saints some insurance, and they ultimately walked off the court with a five-point victory.

Four Saints hit double figures in the contest, with Niesz (14), Perry (12) and Bannon (11) joining Malley's 21 points. Out of Van Dyke's 12 boards, seven were offensive. Bannon and Malley each added five rebounds as well.

The Saints have a quick turnaround before resuming non-conference play, with a home matchup against Hamilton Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
