Mason Baker-Schlendering's double-double helped propel the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a win against Hamilton 79-73 on Wednesday night.
Jackie Malley led the team in points with 20, followed by
Norah Niesz and Baker-Schlendering with 14 each.
"We shot the ball well from everywhere except the foul line in the fourth quarter," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger. "That happened because we executed ball movement outstandingly throughout the game, and were willing to make the extra pass to open teammates. We competed well on the boards against a big, strong team in Hamiton. In the second half, we only allowed one offensive rebound until the final 20 seconds of the game, and that won us the game."
"It didn't play out the way we thought it would. We had too many turnovers and we gave up so many points in the paint. But when you shoot triples as well as we did and control the boards, you can still get a win."
The Saints took an early 6-0 lead after Niesz and Malley field goals. Baker-Schlendering then made it 6-0 after taking a defensive rebound all the way to the other rim for two. The Continentals came back to cut the Saints lead to two at 8-6 for the closest margin of the game.
With the help of
Hannah Van Dyke,
Izzy Caron, and Malley all recoding three pointers in the quarter, the Scarlet and Brown's consistency helped them to a 21-16 advantage going into the second quarter.
In the second, the Saints scored early again with a Malley layup and two free throws. Malley tacked on another three after the Continentals scored three uncontested. With 38 seconds left,
Stevie Bannon got some hoop and harm, giving the Saints a large 42-31 lead with the three-point play. The Saints entered halftime with their 11-point lead in tact.
Baker-Schlendering got the scoring started for the Saints, but Hamilton responded with two of their own. Van Dyke made another three to increase the score to 52-37. Soon after, the Saints took a 19-point lead with a 60-41 score.\
In the fourth, both teams tallied on the fouls late in the game. The Saints were able to capitalize on their free throws and keep the Continentals in check. Like the third, Hamilton did outscore the Saints as they attempted a run back into the game late. However, the Saints were able to hold onto the lead for a close win with help by a three pointer by Perry for her second of the game and jumpers by Niesz, Bannon, and Baker-Schlendering.
The Saints do not play again until the New Year when they play Middlebury College away. The game is set for Saturday, Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. The Scarlet and Brown will return home on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. for the Route 11 Rivalry against Clarkson.
