Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Scoring Keeps Saints Close in Tight Loss at Middlebury

Four members of the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team hit double figures, as they fell in a nine-point defeat to Middlebury, 67-58 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Saints' record moves to 6-3 overall ahead of their resumption of conference play next week.

After Middlebury scored the first four points of the game, they held down a 7-3 lead until Jackie Malley knocked down a three, drew a foul, and drained one from the charity stripe to tie the game on a four-point play.

Malley and Hannah Van Dyke combined for points to match the Panthers' points later in the quarter, then Margaret Dougher drilled a jumper to give the Scarlet and Brown their first lead of the game at 18-17 right before the quarter break. Norah Niesz added her fifth assist of the quarter on the St. Lawrence basket.

In the second, Annie Perry kicked off the quarter by extending St. Lawrence's lead to 21-17 on a three-ball. The Panthers stuck close to the Saints though, and trailed 27-25 at the midpoint of the quarter.

Then, the Saints used a 6-0 run to extend their lead to eight late in the second; their largest lead of the afternoon. Mason Baker-Schlendering had four of the six points in the run. At the half, St. Lawrence led 35-30.

Baker-Schlendeing dropped a turnaround jumper to extend the St. Lawrence lead to seven in the opening seconds of the third quarter, but Middlebury responded by taking a lead via a 9-0 run and led 39-37. Baker-Schlendering responded offensively again by tying the game at 39 as the quarter entered its final four minutes. The teams traded points and entered the final quarter tied at 49.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers built up a lead early and used foul shots late in the quarter to defend it, ultimately outscoring the Saints 18-9 in the fourth and taking away a victory at home in the non-conference affair.

Malley's 12 points were a team-high, while Izzy Caron and Norah Niesz recorded 11 points each. Van Dyke also hit the double-figure mark, posting 10. Malley finished the game 3-5 from the arc, and was perfect in free throws, going 3-3. Niesz finished the game with seven helpers and Baker-Schlendering's six rebounds were the best of the day for St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence resumes play Monday afternoon, when the Saints return to Canton, N.Y. to host Clarkson for the route 11 rivalry at 2 pm in Burkman Gymnasium.
