The Saints scored three goals in 3:40 late in the third, and withstood a late barrage as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team secured a 4-3 road win at RPI on Friday night in the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-6-1 overall and 1-0-0 in ECAC play, while the Engineers fell to 1-8-0 and 1-2-0 in league action.
Nine Saints tallied points in the win, with
Tyler Cristall (1-1-2) and
Cooper Pierson (0-2-2) providing two points apiece.
The Saints came out of the gates hot, scoring the first goal of the game just two minutes and 19 seconds into the contest. At the RPI blueline, Cristall chipped a pass into the slot where Pierson gloved the puck down and sent a pass to
Rasmus Svartström. The first-year jammed the puck past Nate Krawchuck on the back door to give St. Lawrence the lead.
Despite some chances to double the lead, the Engineers ended up tying the game at the 11:33 mark when Dovar Tinling finished off a rebound down low.
Later in the period, the Scarlet and Brown went on a 5-on-3 power play and poured on the pressure.
Sam LeDrew had the best chance, wiring a one-timer off the crossbar and out.
Gabe Westling and Svartström also had great looks, but the chance came to pass, and the game went to intermission at 1-1.
St. Lawrence came out strong in the second period, creating multiple chances, while RPI had just one shot in the first five minutes of play. In the onslaught, Pierson nearly regained the Saints' lead with a shot in the slot but was stymied.
The Scarlet and Brown went on their third power play later in the period, and the team once again saw a one-timer ring off the post. This time, it was Filip Juříček who fired a shot off the iron.
Isaac Tremblay and Juříček had more scoring chances very late in the second period, but the game went to the second break at 1-1 after they were turned away.
Mason Kucenski was a star for the Saints to start the third, making some key saves to keep the game knotted at one. However, the majority of the action came later in the third when the Saints took a 4-1 lead.
With less than six minutes to go, Juříček sent a backhand shot on goal that rebounded out to
Cayden Casey, who buried the chance to go up 2-1. Then moments later,
Nicholas Beneteau and
Jacob Bernadet kept the puck in the offensive zone, and the puck slipped out to
Isaac Tremblay, who got a shot past Krawchuk to double the lead. The offensive explosion ended in the last three minutes of the period when Cristall buried an empty-net goal to go up 4-1 in just 3:40 of action.
RPI wouldn't go down without a fight as they got extra-attacker goals from Gustavs Ozolins and Tyler Wallace to make it 4-3 with less than 30 seconds left. St. Lawrence locked it down to secure the regulation win, however, and earn three ECAC points.
Kucenski stopped 33 shots in the win, while Krawchuk stopped just 29 in the loss.
Both teams' penalty kill was perfect as the Saints went 1-for-1 on the kill, and RPI went 4-for-4.
St. Lawrence will look to carry their momentum into tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when the Saints head to Schenectady for their first game in Union's new arena, the M&T Bank Center.
