The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to earn a 2-0 Liberty League victory over Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
With the win, the Saints improved to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while Clarkson fell to 2-6-3 and 0-4-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half with just one shot between the two teams, the Saints broke through in the 61st minute when
Meredith Donahue netted her fourth goal of the season off a feed from
Sydney Keenan.
The junior collected the ball at the midfield line and evaded a defender before sending a picture-perfect through ball to Donahue, who was sprinting up the pitch. The senior put a right-footed shot past Kenie Roth to take the 1-0 lead.
The goal opened things up in the game, and the Scarlet and Brown took advantage, earning an insurance marker in the 76th minute.
Lilly Losey was playing the ball up the left side of the pitch where she was hauled down, and the Saints were awarded a free kick just outside the box.
Chloe Bourque took the free kick and drove it to the far post, where
Barrett Freeman knocked the ball home to put St. Lawrence up 2-0.
With the goals, Donahue tied the team lead with four goals and now has the most points on the team with ten. Bourque tallied her fourth assist of the season, which leads the Saints in the playmaking department.
Clarkson was only able to get one more shot on goal in the final minutes, but
Zoe Davenport and the Saints' back line earned the clean sheet.
Davenport made three saves to earn the shutout and now has three solo clean sheets on the season to go with a pair of combined shutouts. Roth made five saves on seven shots in the visiting woodwork.
St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 12-7, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
St. Lawrence returns to action this Saturday, October 11, at 1 p.m., when they host Vassar College at Sandy MacAllaster Field in another Liberty League tilt.
