Six touchdowns, including five from senior
Will Lederman, powered the St. Lawrence University football team to a 45-14 win over Hilbert in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
Lederman passed for a career-high 341 yards and four touchdowns, going 14-for-17, with a game long 73-yard pass.
Sean Miles tallied five passes for 35 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a team-best 34 yards on Saturday.
Nicholas Huhtala recorded four catches for a career-best 137 yards, while
Shea Goodwin logged six catches for 95.
Ryan Surhoff and
Luke Robillard picked up 12 tackles apiece. Robillard's 12 was another career-high for the Saints. First-year
Pat Ryan recorded eight tackles, while
Ethan Metro finished with six and a sack for the loss of 12 yards.
Anthony Ferro recorded five and a huge blocked punt
St. Lawrence started out hot, scoring two touchdowns in the first five minutes of play. Lederman found Goodwin with a 52-yard pass at 14:12 and less than three minutes later connected with Huhtala on a 73 yarder to put the Saints up 14-0, as both
Clayton Fogler's kicks were good.
Lederman then capped the first quarter and a 75-yard drive with a six-yard run to make it 21-0 after the first 15 minutes of play.
William Murray logged his first career touchdown with a 64-yard run, getting a great block in the process, and Fogler's fourth kick was good for the 28-0 lead.
Hilbert's Joseph Edick responded with a one-yard touchdown run, putting the Hawks on the board, 28-7.
With time winding down in the half, the Saints called a timeout with two seconds to play. Fogler then kicked a career-long 49-yard field goal, giving St. Lawrence a 31-7 spread at the break.
Huhtala picked up his second touchdown of the game at 9:06 of the third, for a 43-yard touchdown, increasing the score to 38-7.
Sean Miles stepped in and got in on the scoring action with a four-yard touchdown pass to
Cole Phelan, who had another career-first for the Scarlet and Brown.
Hilbert put the final points on the board with a 47-yard run from Darrion Montgomery at 11:11 of the fourth.
Mike Hanlon led the ground game for the Hawks, netting 79 yards, while Nicholas West recorded the lone 25-yard catch. Scotty Winchell led the defense with nine tackles, while Neven Dermady finished with six.
SLU finished with a 22-13 advantage in first downs and recorded a season-high 484 yards on offense to Hilbert's 260. The Hawks converted on 4-of-5 four-down opportunities.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Hilbert fell to 0-5 and 0-2, respectively.
The Saints are scheduled to host Ithaca next Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m.
