The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team was handed its first road loss of the season, dropping a 2-0 decision to Ithaca College in Liberty League play on Wednesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
With the loss, St. Lawrence moved to 8-6-3 overall and 4-4-0 in Liberty League play. Ithaca improved to 6-5-4 and 3-3-2 in the conference.
The Saints' fate is in their own hands with one game left to go in the regular season. A win on Saturday guarantees a home playoff game in next week's league playoffs, while a tie gives them a playoff berth. On the other side of the coin, a loss and results around the league could leave the Saints without a berth.
Ithaca had the best of chances early in the match, but
Zoe Davenport stood tall in the woodwork.
Maddie Needham, however, had the best chance of any with a shot in the 32
nd minute that Katrina Varnum stymied.
Instead, Ithaca broke the score a couple of minutes later with a Jayne Bogle tally in the 34
th minute to gain the lead.
The Bomber lead doubled in the final minutes of the first half as Devin Sylvia fired a long shot in to beat the buzzer.
Zoe Rogan had all four chances that the Saints produced in the second half of action, but only one found the woodwork, where Varnum made the stop and secured the win.
Davenport made five saves in 45 minutes of play, while Murphy stopped the lone shot she faced in the second half. Varnum came up with two saves in the home goal for the clean sheet.
St. Lawrence will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday, November 1, at Union College, with the Liberty League playoffs looming large. The key matchup will kick off at 2 p.m. in Schenectady.
