Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Donahue Scores; Murphy Earns Clean Sheet in 1-0 Senior Day Win Over RPI

Senior forward Meredith Donahue scored the game's lone goal, and Reagan Murphy posted a shutout in the woodwork as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team battled to a 1-0 win over RPI on Senior Day at Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton, N.Y.

The Saints improved to 8-5-3 overall and 4-3-0 in conference action, while the Engineers dropped to 5-7-3 and 1-4-2 in the league. The win puts the Scarlet and Brown in fifth place in the league standings as they jockey for a playoff berth.

Despite the score holding at 0-0 after the first half, it wasn't for lack of trying as the Saints poured 16 shot attempts in the direction of the RPI goal.

Early in the half, Chloe Bourque had two shots on frame that were stopped by Audrey Montero. Later in the half, Zoe Rogan saw her bid stopped by the netminder as the game went to the break at 0-0.

St. Lawrence finally broke through just under two minutes into the second half. The scoring play was started around midfield by Sofia Manne, who did well to cause a turnover and fire a through ball up the wing to Lily Pleau. The senior found her classmate Donahue, who did the rest, finding twine to take the lead.

The Scarlet and Brown didn't relent after taking the lead, pouring five more shots in the direction of the Engineer goal in the next 11 minutes of play.

Despite the pressure, the Saints were unable to double the lead and had to settle in and defend towards the end of the contest.

Murphy and the back line were up to the task, directing the play away from the goal, and when they found the frame, they were snared by Murphy, who earned her first career clean sheet.

St. Lawrence's offensive onslaught added up to a 28-10 edge in shot attempts and had an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. They also had the 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, underscoring their pressure.

Murphy stopped all five shots she faced to earn her first career win and first career shutout. Audrey Montero put up a valiant effort in the face of immense pressure for the Engineers, stopping six shots, while an RPI defender earned a team save to help her keeper.

The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday, October 29, when the team heads to Ithaca to take on the Bombers in a 3 p.m. matchup with major playoff implications.
