The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team got goals from
Ryan Campbell and
Eric Edmonds en route to a 2-1 road win against RPI on Saturday afternoon in Troy, N.Y.
The Saints improved to 6-8 on the year and 4-4-0 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers fell to 4-6-5 and 1-3-3 in league play. The three points put the Scarlet and Brown in fifth place in the league standings with one week to go in the regular season.
"That was a big win for the team as we move closer to the playoffs," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "The amount of character and fight this group has is tremendous!"
St. Lawrence struck first in the 11th minute to take the 1-0 lead. First-year
Kenneth Mejia Lopez ignited the play, finding Campbell, who beat Antonio Spina to start the match on the right foot. Â
RPI responded six minutes later, however, converting a penalty kick by Christopher McKinney to level the score.
Eric Edmonds provided the would-be game-winner in the 36th minute, finishing off a chance to put the Saints ahead 2-1 before the end of the first half.
St. Lawrence controlled possession in the second half and didn't allow any shot attempts until the 84
th minute. RPI got three shots off in the final six minutes, but none found the frame as the game went final.
The Saints outshot RPI 11-8 in attempts and 8-2 in shots on goal. St. Lawrence also had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Zach Amato made one save in goal to secure the win, while RPI's Spina stopped six shots in the loss.
St. Lawrence will return to action next Saturday, November 1, when the team hosts Union in the final game of the regular season. The match, which will also serve as Senior Day, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. as the Saints aim to secure a playoff berth.
