Berit Brecke ruled the net with a game-high four blocks, but the St. Lawrence University volleyball team fell to the Union Garnet Chargers 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 19-25) on senior night.
Seniors Adeline Riesenberger and Sofia Velasquez recorded six and four kills, respectively, to highlight their final home weekend.
"We battled hard at times but we shot ourselves in the foot at critical moments of the match," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "I thought we played very intelligently at times and that kept us in the match but we just had too many unforced errors."
With the loss, St. Lawrence moves to 13-9 overall and 2-5 in Liberty League play.
Despite strong defensive play and long rallies, Union controlled the opening set wire-to-wire. Araiza Acum-Santos tallied three kills in the frame, while Riesenberger and Bridget Gammons each added two.
The second set featured a tight back-and-forth battle early on. The Saints went on a four-point run midway through, sparked by kills from Gammons and Velasquez, to take a 15-13 lead. However, with the score tied at 20-20, Union closed on a 5-1 run to take the set.
St. Lawrence jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in the third set, but Union rallied to even the score at 11-11 after back-to-back kills and capitalizing on Saint miscues. Gammons led the Saints with 10 kills and 13.5 total points, while Vanessa Latam dished out 24 assists.
The Saints close out Liberty League play tomorrow at home against Vassar College. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
