Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Saints Use LeClair, Hamilton Goals to Surge Past Union in Conference Win

Sydney LeClair kicked off the St. Lawrence University field hockey team's scoring, and Caroline Hamilton had the go-ahead goal, as the Saints used a strong second-half surge to earn a 2-1 win over the Union Garnet Chargers in Liberty League play Sunday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.

With the win, St. Lawrence improved to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in Liberty League play, while Union fell to 9-7 and 4-2.

"I'm really proud of this group," said Saints head coach Fran Grembowicz. "They've battled all season, and today they dug deep when it mattered most. Their composure and confidence made the difference in the most consequential parts of the game."

Union had the first offensive look of the game and opened the scoring early, when Maddie Greco finished a rebound off a Megan Dorsey pass to give the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 lead in the game's fourth minute.

Union dictated the opening quarter, maintaining circle possession and outshooting the Saints 5-1, while Saints keeper Elizabeth Walsh turned aside four early shots to keep St. Lawrence within one.

The Saints began to settle in during the second frame, tightening their defense and connecting cleaner through the midfield. The momentum shifted after halftime as St. Lawrence pressed, and their persistence paid off at 30:53. Sydney LeClair converted, redirecting a ball deep in the circle to even the score at 1-1. Lily Gubbins drew an assist on the play.

St. Lawrence continued to control play through the third quarter, stringing together possessions inside the attacking end. Caroline Hamilton capitalized on that pressure at the 42-minutes mark, driving into the circle and firing a shot over the line for her team-leading fifth of the year. That gave the Saints their first lead.

Saints defenders then stayed composed through the final 15 minutes, with Walsh making several key saves. Union pulled the goalkeeper for an extra attacker late but couldn't break past the St. Lawrence backline.

Walsh finished with 10 saves in the cage, anchoring a disciplined defensive effort that held the Garnet Chargers scoreless over the final 56 minutes.

With the conclusion of this contest, the Saints' home schedule has come to an end. They finish their season with games at Vassar and Cortland.
