Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 10 Saints Battle No. 7 Cornell to 2-2 Tie

Claire Tyo and Tori Verbeek scored and Emma-Sofie Nordström made 32 saves, as the No. 10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie with seventh-ranked Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

In a fast-paced first period, the Big Red held a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal. Nordström was strong in net once again, stopping all 16, including a shot from Delaney Fleming with 8.7 seconds to play.

Three goals in the second period opened things up a bit. The first came off the stick of Verbeek. After a scramble in front of Cornell goaltender Annelies Bergmann off shots from Taylor Lum and Sarah Marchand, Verbeek cashed in on the power play to give SLU a 1-0 lead.

Cornell responded just over two minutes later with an unassisted tally from Mckenna Gelder, after digging the puck free on an initial save from Nordström.

That wasn't the end of the action in the second as 55 seconds after the Big Red goal, Marchand won the battle for the puck in the corner and found Tyo waiting on the doorstep giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.

Cornell found the equalizer at 3:21 of the third, as Georgia Schiff banked a high shot off the cross bar, tying the game 2-2.

Both teams generated strong chances in the remainder of the third and overtime, including a late push from the Saints, as Cornell was called for a bench minor with 11 seconds remaining in the third starting overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage.

Both goaltenders were up to the task in the extra frame sealing the final 2-2. The Big Red won the shootout 1-0. With the final tie, both teams earn 1.5 points in the conference standings.

"Another very entertaining game at Appleton today," said head coach Chris Wells. "Cornell and SLU have played some great ones here in past years and this year's version was another game where there was just about everything."

"Emma saved the day with her first period performance allowing us to find our game. After the first we played at a pace where we were able to generate a lot of opportunities. Cornell had great chances too and their transition game is as good as anyone and they create so much off of it."

Nordström finished with 32 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Bergmann tallied 36.

Both teams recorded 59 shots to finish things off and the Saints held a 38-34 edge in shots on goal.

"This is a great weekend for us to build on heading into the remainder of the league schedule," Wells added.

St. Lawrence moved to 12-5-5 on the season and 6-1-3 in ECAC play, while Cornell moved to 10-3-3 and 7-1-2, respectively.

The Saints hit the road next weekend and travel to Union and RPI on January 10 and 11.
