Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Power Play Lifts No. 8 Saints to Victory Over Union, Wells Records 300th Win

Two early power play goals and four different goal scorers powered the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-2 win over Union on Friday night at Messa Rink, earning head coach Chris Wells his 300th career win with the Scarlet and Brown.

With his 300th win, Wells becomes the 27th head coach in women's hockey history to achieve 300 wins.

Aly McLeod got the scoring started for the Scarlet and Brown. After shots from Taylor Lum and Tori Verbeek, she capitalized on the third rebound for the Saints first power play tally of the game.

Just over midway through the first period, Sarah Marchand tacked on a second power play goal with a one timer from the bottom of the right circle, beating Sophie Matsoukas for the 2-0 lead.

With 7.9 seconds left in the first, Mallory Mauracher brought the game back within one for Union, after a turnover and quick rush from the Garnet Chargers.

After the first 20 minutes of play, the Saints held a 12-11 edge in shots on goal.

The majority of the second period was a game of full-ice back-and-forth action. The Saints settled in near the five-minute mark and saw quality shot chances from Kiley Mastel and Melissa Jefferies, but Matsoukas was up to the task.

Jefferies then sent a home-run pass across ice to Abby Hustler, who was waiting on the Union blue line. Hustler went 1-on-1 with Matsoukas and went top corner for the 3-1 lead.

After the second period, St. Lawrence led 20-14 in shots on goal.

Union added a power play goal of their own, as Karianne Engelbert scored a minute into the advantage to bring the game to 3-2.

SLU successfully killed off a late Union power play with about four minutes to play in the third. Following the kill, Union called a timeout and pulled Matsoukas with 1:58 to play for the extra attacker.

Anna Segedi added the insurance goal for the Saints, scoring her 50th career goal for the 4-2 final.

"Just like almost all our games this year, it came right down to the end," said Wells. "We found a way to finish the game well Union was pressing to tie it up. This time of year is the best when all the league games mean so much and everyone is playing each other. Our power play was excellent tonight going 2-2 and only using up about 30-40 seconds of PP time. Union kept good pressure on us at times during the game and we were able to get some bounces to get the win!"

Emma-Sofie Nordström and Matsoukas both finished with 23 saves.

The Saints finished with a 27-25 edge in shots on goal, while the Garnet Chargers finished with a 49-41 advantage in shots. SLU finished 2-for-2 on the power play, while Union finished 1-for-2.

With the win, the Saints improved to 13-5-5 overall and 7-1-3 in ECAC play, while Union fell to 8-14-1 and 5-7-0, respectively.

St. Lawrence will head over to Troy to take on RPI at the Houston Field House tomorrow at 3 p.m.
