Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 8 Saints Complete Weekend Sweep with Shutout Win Over RPI; Move to First in League Standings

Kennedy Wilson and Kiley Mastel found the back of the net and Emma-Sofie Nordström recorded her fifth shutout of the season to lead the No. 8 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over RPI on Saturday at the Houston Field House.

With the win, the Saints improved to 14-5-5 overall and 8-1-3 in the league standings, while RPI fell to 11-11-2 and 4-8-1. The win today propelled the Saints to first place in the ECAC standings with 28.5 points in league play.

The Saints power play continued to shine from Friday, as Wilson redirected a shot from Aly McLeod with four seconds left in the advantage putting SLU on the board with 4:52 to play in the first.

After the first frame, RPI held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal, but the Saints led 1-0.

Mastel corralled the puck in the Saints zone, carried it through the neutral zone, and pulled a nifty inside-outside move, while taking on three defenders to score her first goal of the season and put the Saints up 2-0.

After 40 minutes of play, St. Lawrence maintained their two-goal lead and RPI continued to lead in shots on goal, 21-16.

Both Nordström and Maelee Ambrass kept the other team scoreless through the third. The Engineers pulled Ambrass with 2:30 to play in the third for the extra attacker but came up empty handed.

"A real hard-fought win for our team today," said head coach Chris Wells. "RPI worked all game and didn't allow us to get a ton of possession and zone time. Emma was on her game and made a huge difference in the outcome. A big stop to start the third and then we got a good break with one off the post late in the game."

"Again, for the second night in a row we finished the game strong to get even more experience in these situations that we will be in the remainder of the year! Our power play was opportunistic on our first chance and that gave us some breathing room to start in the first."

Nordström finished with 31 saves and recorded fifth shutout this season and her 12th career shutout, while Ambrass made 17 saves for RPI.

RPI outshot the Saints 31-19, while St. Lawrence went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off both power play advantages for the Engineers.

"We will take the week to get rested up as we head back to classes and get ready for Yale and Brown," Wells added.

The Saints will return to Appleton Arena to host Brown and Yale next weekend. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. against the Bears on Friday and 3 p.m. vs. the Bulldogs on Saturday.
