Caelan McHarney led the Saints with 11 points and four assists,
Elizabeth Flynn had a double-double, and 12 different Saints contributed points as the St. Lawrence women's basketball team routed the Bard Raptors 68-35 Friday night in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
With the victory, the Saints are now 12-6 and 6-5 in conference play, as they currently sit at fifth place in the Liberty League.
In the opening quarter, the Saints quickly got off to a 4-0 lead but overall the two teams were more defensive minded. The Saints had a 7-0 run after the Raptors got out in front 7-5 and took a 12-9 lead into the second quarter. With six minutes left before halftime, St. Lawrence scored eight straight with McHarney assisting on two layups by
Mason Baker-Schlendering during the run.
This spurt gave the Scarlet and Brown a 24-13 advantage. Bard got it to six with 1:35 left, but the Saints scored the last six of the final eight points in the half and to earn a 32-22 lead. Baker-Schlendering had eight points while McHarney had four assists at the break.
The Saints really got going with a 13-0 run a 1:30 into the quarter. During this run, McCarney added five points to bring her total to 11 and the Saints were doubling the Raptors 45-22.
Defensively, St. Lawrence held Bard without a point in the first five minutes of the third quarter and only five for the quarter off of 2-16 shooting. The lead was up to 54-27 after the third quarter. Once again, the Saints held the Raptors in check by only allowing one point in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Molly Keaveney had five points late and the Saints went on to win by 33.
Flynn was the only other Saint with 10 points and led the team with 10 rebounds.
Mason Baker-Schlendering had eight points, eight rebounds, and five steals and
Nicole Jeffrey added seven rebounds coming off the bench. The Saints had 50 rebounds, 14 steals, and held the Raptors to 4-for-25 shooting in the second half.
With the victory, St. Lawrence has now won 25 straight games against Bard.
The Saints will have a big game against the second-place Vassar Brewers tomorrow, February 1 at 2 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Saints lost a tight one 66-60 in their home matchup against the Brewers back in early January.
