On Saturday, when the men's team hosts Colgate at Appleton Arena, the St. Lawrence University men's program will honor the 1999-2000 Saints team that won the ECAC title and reached the Frozen Four thanks to a four-overtime win over Boston University in the NCAA Tournament.
There will be a ceremonial puck drop before the contest, and then a ceremony between the first and second periods to honor the team.
The Saints, who were led by head coach Joe Marsh, and assistant coaches Chris Wells, and Jay Heinbuck went 27-8-2 during the 1999-2000 season and defeated RPI 2-0 in Lake Placid to claim the ECAC Championship.
The team advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they took part in the longest college hockey game in men's D1 tournament history against Boston University.
The Saints, led by Brandon Dietrich, Erik Anderson, Mike Gellard, and Derek Gustafson, took on the Rick Dipietro and Jay Pandolfo-led Terriers in the Pepsi Arena, with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line.
The game would be tied after three periods and went into a record four overtimes to decide a winner. In the fourth overtime, the Virden, Manitoba product Robin Carruthers played the hero scoring the game-winning goal to advance the Saints to the Frozen Four. Gustafson was tremendous in net stopping 72 shots which was only eclipsed by DiPietro, who faced 80 Saint shots and stopped 77.
In total, the game lasted 123 minutes and 53 seconds and was the longest tournament game until the 2020-21 season when the record was broken in a game between Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota.
