Box Score Taylor Lum recorded two goals and
Kristina Bahl added one, as the No. 10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team rang in 2025 with a 3-2 upset win over fifth-ranked Colgate on Friday evening at Appleton Arena.
Without a whistle in the first 10 minutes of play, the Raiders held onto a bit of an edge in the first period with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, but Saints goaltender
Emma-Sofie Nordström was up to the task.
An evenly paced battle continued throughout the second, as both goaltenders kept the game knotted at 0-0 and the Saints pulled ahead with an 11-10 edge in shots on goal.
The game exploded in the third period with all five goals.
St. Lawrence struck first as
Sarah Thompson sent the puck out of the corner to the stick of Bahl, who fired a shot just under the crossbar beating Hannah Murphy for the 1-0 lead.
Lum notched the second goal for the Scarlet and Brown for the 2-0 lead. She gathered speed in the neutral zone and flipped a short-angled shot over the shoulder of Murphy for her first of the night.
Neena Brick brought the game back within one for the Raiders with 1:12 to play in the third, but the Saints responded with their third of the game just 17 seconds later.
With Murphy on the bench, Lum tallied her second of the night with an empty netter, giving SLU a 3-1 lead.
Melissa Jefferies and Bahl assisted on the play.
Kristýna Kaltounkova added one more for Colgate, as she slipped one past Nordström for the 3-2 final.
"I'm not sure I've been a part of a game that went the first ten minutes without a whistle," said head coach
Chris Wells. "The game started with good pace and Colgate created a ton of chances. We settled in and were able to get some chances ourselves. Both goalies were excellent and kept the game 0-0 until we were able to find the back of the net.Â
"We haven't been in this spot in a while, so it was a good feeling to finish off and get the win," Wells added. "Certainly, a very good result tonight and a good way to start the New Year!"
Nordström finished with 19 saves for the Saints, while Murphy finished with 17 for the Raiders. Colgate held the 21-20 edge in shots on goal.
St. Lawrence improved to 12-5-4 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play, while Colgate fell to 16-5-0 and 7-2-0, respectively.
The Saints are back at it with another ranked battle, as they host seventh-ranked Cornell tomorrow at 3 p.m.
