Anna Segedi recorded two goals, while
Claire Tyo notched three assists and
Emma-Sofie Nordström made 33 saves, as the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team claimed game one of the Route 11 rivalry with a 6-5 win over ninth-ranked Clarkson on Friday night at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson took an early lead with a quick goal off the faceoff, just 2:26 into play.
Less than a minute later, the Golden Knights were called for tripping and Segedi evened the score on the power play. An initial shot from the right circle by
Abby Hustler, just trickled wide and Segedi was able to capitalize on a scramble in front of Clarkson goaltender Adreanna Doucette.
Within the span of 11 seconds, the Saints increased their lead to 3-1.
Kennedy Wilson scored the second goal on the Saints second power play of the game with a tip off the pass from Segedi and 11 seconds later, off the faceoff, Segedi went five hole for her second of the game giving the Scarlet and Brown the two-goal advantage.
After the first 20 minutes of play, Clarkson led 12-7 in shots on goal.
Within the first few minutes of the second, the Golden Knights had tied things back up at three apiece.
But at 8:28,
Tori Verbeek secured the puck in the neutral zone and found
Sarah Marchand, who sent a pass into the slot for
Aly McLeod, who beat a sliding Doucette for the 4-3 lead.
With 1:00 minute to play in the second, Clarkson rebounded once again tying things up 4-4 before heading into the intermission.
Through two periods, Clarkson led 31-12 in shots on goal and Nordström tallied 16 of her 33 saves in the second period.
Jenna Goodwin notched an unassisted short-handed goal on a breakaway to give Clarkson a 5-4 lead to start the third, but the high scoring affair continued, as
Taylor Lum collected the puck at center ice and sniped a shot to the top corner, tying things up at 5-5.
The winning goal came off a redirected shot that hit the skate of Hustler with just over three minutes to play in the third. Tyo passed the puck to McLeod in the slot, who tipped the puck, which took the right bounce off Hustler for the goal. Clarkson challenged, but the goal stood as the game winner.
"One of the wildest ones we've had over at Cheel in long time," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We were able to get the last good bounce of the night and found a way to finish the game. Clarkson played a great game and we were very fortunate to come away with the three points."
"It's been a while since we have won a regulation game in Cheel," Wells added. "We will get a good rest and be ready for a quick turnaround tomorrow to play them again."
The 6-5 final marks the highest scoring matchup in Route 11 rivalry series history. It was also the Saints first win at Cheel Arena since February 26, 2021, where the Saints defeated Clarkson 4-3 in overtime. The last regulation win in Potsdam came on February 27, 2010, with a 2-1 win for the Scarlet and Brown.
Nordström finished with 33 saves, while Doucette stopped 11 for Clarkson. The Golden Knights finished with a 38-17 advantage in shots on goal, while St. Lawrence went 2-for-3 on the power play and held Clarkson 0-for-4 with a successful kill.
With the win, the Saints improved to 16-6-5 overall and 10-2-3 in ECAC play, while Clarkson fell to 18-8-1 and 9-6-0.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Appleton Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
