Emma-Sofie Nordström made 26 saves, but a power play goal in the third was the difference, as the ninth-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights edged the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Unlike last night's 6-5 high-scoring affair at Cheel Arena, the first 40 minutes remained knotted a 0-0. Â
Clarkson held the edge in shots on goal, going 13-6 after one and 21-12 after two.
At 8:40 of the third, the Golden Knights found the eventual difference maker, as Anne Cherkowski took an initial close range shot, but the shot was blocked by a sliding
Claire Tyo. The puck lingered and Rhea Hicks snuck it over the blocker of Nordström for the game winner.
Nearing the two-minute mark, the Saints pulled Nordström and generated some quality chances, but were unable to find an equalizer.Â
"It was another tightly contested game vs. Clarkson today," said head coach Chris Wells. "A great crowd that we unfortunately couldn't get one in to give them something to cheer for."
"We had some real good chances late to tie it, but Gruber came up big with two big saves."
Nordström stopped 26 shots for the Scarlet and Brown, while Holly Gruber finished with 18.
Clarkson outshot the Saints 27-18 in shots on goal and finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
The Saints moved to 16-7-5 on the season and 10-3-3 in conference play, while Clarkson improved to 19-8-1 and 10-6-0.
"It has been so enjoyable over the years to see the North Country embrace women's hockey and support both SLU and Clarkson," Wells added. "The players on the ice feel the support and energy!"
St. Lawrence travels to Cornell and Colgate next weekend, taking on the Big Red on Friday at 6 p.m. and the Raiders on Saturday at 3 p.m.
