Abby Hustler scored on the power play and
Emma-Sofie Nordström made 27 saves for her sixth shutout of the season, as the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team rebounded with a 1-0 win over Yale on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
With the win, St. Lawrence improved to 15-6-5 overall and 9-2-3 in conference play, while Yale fell to 11-8-2 and 6-7-1.
A fast-paced game to start, the Saints had some quality chances and led 9-5 in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes of play.
Hustler found the back of the net for the Saints the second night in a row. Just 19 seconds into the power play,
Anna Segedi left the puck off for
Kristina Bahl, Bahl fired a shot from high in the slot and it looked like Bulldogs goaltender Pia Dukaric got a piece of it, but a diving Hustler pushed the puck across the goal line.
St. Lawrence held onto their one goal lead after 40 minutes of play, applying heavy pressure and led 17-8 in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs picked up the pace in the third period, but Nordström kept Yale at bay, making 19 of her 27 saves in the third.
Yale pulled Dukaric for the extra attacker with 2:55 to play and pinned the Saints in their zone. As the second's ticked away, Yale nearly found the equalizer, but defender
Bella Parento saved the puck and the day, securing the shutout effort.
"Today was a great bounce back from Friday in many ways," said head coach Chris Wells. "We found out a lot about ourselves this weekend and it was a true joy to be a part of it."
"I thought the first was one of the most fast-paced periods of the year. Both teams played very well and played hard and clean. The second belonged to us and had super effort on our goal. Funny how it works sometimes. Both teams had great plays and chances and the only goal of the game is a pile of players diving for a loose puck to move it about three inches."
"Emma was fabulous in the third as Yale came hard and didn't let up," Wells added. "A lot of pucks bounced our way in the last three minutes to preserve the win."
Nordström made 27 saves for her sixth shutout of the season, which ranks second nationally. Her sixth shutout this season increases her to 13 career shutouts in Scarlet and Brown. Dukaric finished with 18 saves for the Bulldogs.
With just one penalty in the game, the Saints went 1-for-1 on the power play, while Yale wasn't afforded any opportunities. The Bulldogs outshot the Saints 47-32 and 27-19 in shots on goal.
Next weekend is Route 11 rivalry weekend, as the Saints faceoff against cross-town rival Clarkson. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cheel Arena on Friday and 3 p.m. at Appleton Arena on Saturday.
