Adam Dudzinski had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds but the St. Lawrence men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 60-59 loss at the buzzer in a tightly contested game against the Union Garnet Chargers Friday night in Schenectady, N.Y.
The Saints fall to 9-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference with the defeat.
"Those type of losses stick with you," said Saints head coach
Chris Downs. "Hats off to Union, they made one more play than us tonight. We need to turn our focus to Ithaca on Saturday."
In the first half, neither team received consistent offense with both the Saints and Garnet Chargers taking no more than a four point lead. The longest scoring run any team had was a 6-0 run by the Garnet Chargers, which made the game 26-22 in favor of Union. Later, with St. Lawrence trailing 28-24 with a minute left,
Andrew Cowan drew two free throws and sunk both. Then,
Aidan Macaulay added one from the charity stripe and the Saints were down 28-27 at halftime. The Saints had balanced scoring across the board with eight different players recording points and
Gavin Macaulay leading them with six.
A three from Dudzinski a few minutes into the third quarter gave the Saints a 37-34 lead; their first advantage since the four minute mark of the first half. With 10 minutes to go,
Dan Anderson hit a mid-range jumper to expand the lead up to 47-41, the largest of the game for either team. The Saints held onto a slim lead until with 2:35, the Garnet Chargers drained a three-ball to take a 57-56 lead.
Just 10 seconds later,
Troy McPherson scored on the other end to give the Saints the lead back. With the same 58-57 score, the Garnet Chargers failed to score with 10 seconds left. After fouling, Dudzinski went 1-for-2 at the line and the Saints were leading 59-57 with six seconds left. Matthew Garside for the Garnet Chargers got the ball up the court quickly and drained three from the wing as the clock hit zero, ending the game as the Garnet Chargers walked off the court with the win.
Troy McPherson had 10 points off the bench as the only other Saint in double figures.
Gavin Macaulay and
Trey Syroka each had three assists and Macaulay added seven points and five rebounds while Syroka had four steals.
The Saints will head west to take on the first place Ithaca Bombers tomorrow, January 17 with a 4 p.m. tip-off.
