The Scarlet and Brown offense exploded for four goals on the day as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team claimed the Mayor's Cup with a 4-0 win over Hartwick in Oneonta, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
St. Lawrence improved to 1-2-1 with the win, while Hartwick fell to 2-1-1. SUNY Oneonta and Hobart went to a 1-1 draw in their game helping the Saints secure the Cup for the first time since 2018.
Sophomore striker
Henry Brown led the way with a brace and an assist, while
Ryan Campbell and
Nicholas Petrone added the other two goals. Â
It didn't take long for the offensive barrage to begin with the Saints lighting up the scoreboard in the ninth minute.
Dennis Argueta started the play causing a turnover in the offensive end. The midfielder skipped a pass down to
Grant Gilmer, who laced a pass across the box to Brown, who knocked the ball home to give the team the early 1-0 lead.
Gilmer, who has had a strong start to his career at St. Lawrence, earned his first career point with the assist.
Towards the end of the first half the Scarlet and Brown doubled their lead. Petrone was tasked with a corner kick in the 42nd minute and didn't let it go to waste putting the ball on Campbell, who beat the goalkeeper to give St. Lawrence the 2-0 lead at the half.
Brown took a page out of Argueta's playbook in the second half causing a turnover in dangerous territory. The sophomore swiped a lazy pass in the 65
th minute and immediately headed for the goal. Brown beat Dante Gesamondo to add the third tally.
Petrone put the finishing touches on the game in the 79
th minute off more great plays from Argueta and Brown. Argueta once again had the ball and found the streaking Brown down the right side of the pitch. Brown evaded a defender and curled a pass out to Petrone, who tapped the ball into the open net to put the game on ice.
George Charalambous earned his first career clean sheet stopping the lone shot he faced in the contest. Gesamondo made three saves in the opposing goal.
St. Lawrence dominated the game front to back outshooting Hartwick 12-2, and 7-1 in shots on frame.
The Scarlet and Brown will head home and begin preparing for their first home game of the season next Saturday against SUNY Canton at 1 p.m.
