Grace Mochnal recorded five shots and Meredith Donahue and Emma Casey each recorded four but the St. Lawrence University Women's Soccer team fell 1-0 to the Nazareth Golden Flyers Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
The Saints fell to 1-2-0 after dropping their first road game of the season while the Golden Flyers improved to 3-0-0.
"Despite the game's outcome, I was really happy with our performance," said Sinead McSharry "We dominated the second half and had quality opportunities to tie the game."
The first 40 minutes of the game were evenly played and back and forth with the Golden Flyers and the Saints both recording four shots each. Nazareth however, scored with two minutes left in the half, as a loose ball right inside the box gave an open shot for Tatum Overton, who placed the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to break the ice and put Nazareth up 1-0 at halftime.
When the second half began, the Saints picked up the aggressiveness, getting nine shots off in the first twenty minutes but goalkeeper Annika Monfort held her ground defending the Golden Flyers net, and the Saints had nothing to show for their dominating play.
In the 79th minute, with the Scarlet and Brown now outshooting Nazareth 14-1 in the half, had their best look of the game with a shot by Casey at the top of the box. The ball was aimed just below the crossbar but Monfort was able to get a hand on it and punch it above the net. The Golden Flyers were able to defend the resulting corner kick well as the Saints came out empty-handed on the push once again.
The Saints only managed one more shot in the game, this one by Mochnal in the 82nd minute. The Golden Flyers were much more crisp with their passing late in the game, and the St. Lawrence was mostly stuck defending their zone as the clock wound down to zero they fell 1-0.
The Scarlet and Brown tripled up the Golden Flyers with 21 shots compared with Nazareth's seven with an even further disparity with shots on goal beating the Golden Flyers 13-4. Darcie McDonough had three saves for the Saints.
St. Lawrence will have a quick turnaround and will be back in action this coming Wednesday when the team heads to Geneseo, N.Y. to take on the Knights in a 4 p.m. start.
