Zoe Rogan scored the game's lone goal in the 28
th minute, and
Darcie McDonough picked up her first career clean sheet as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer defeated SUNY Geneseo 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Geneseo, N.Y.
The Saints leveled their record at 2-2-0 with the win, while the Knights got handed their first loss and are 2-1-1 on the year.
"I'm proud of the performance and grit our team showed against a good side," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "The bench was electric, and we hope to bring that momentum into this weekend."
The two teams played evenly to start the contest getting three shots off each in the opening 18 minutes of the game. McDonough and Molle Collins each made a save in the early going.
The tie didn't last much longer as the Saints put a goal on the scoreboard in the 28
th minute. Rogan picked up the ball outside of the box and hit a left-footed strike to the right side of the goal and over the hands of the keeper to claim the 1-0 lead.
Rogan had the lone effort for either team in the remainder of the first half but saw her shot sail out right.
Early in the second half, it looked as if St. Lawrence could double their lead as
Maille McMahon charged down the left wing with the ball. She was able to get a shot on the goal but was stopped by Collins to keep the lead at one.
In the latter part of the half, the Knights made a push to tie the contest but the Saints' defense, McDonough stood tall.
Nadai Jaworowicz was stopped by McDonough in the 77
th minute, but her teammate had Geneseo's best chance of the night in the 86
th minute. With time winding down, Casey Holstein was able to get a good shot off and saw her shot graze the crossbar to keep the Knights off the board.
McDonough made two saves in the clean sheet, while Collins made two saves in the loss.
St. Lawrence held the narrow edge in shots 8-7 and shots on frame at 3-2. Geneseo was able to lead the way 5-3 in corner kicks but could not break through the stout Saints' defense.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back home this weekend for a 3 p.m. match at Sandy MacAllaster Field against Oswego State.
