Senior Grace Mochnal led the way with a goal and an assist, while three others scored goals as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated Oswego State 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Sandy McAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-2 on the year, while the Lakers fell to 3-3.
"It was a great collective effort today," said head coach Sinead McSharry "It was so special to celebrate the win with so many Saints' families and alumni!"
Mochnal got the Saints on the board in the 16th minute of the non-conference matchup to give the Saints the 1-0 lead. Meredith Donahue ran down the right wing and sent a through ball to Mochnal in the box. The senior rifled a shot under the crossbar to gain the lead.
Less than five minutes later, that lead doubled off a free kick. Following an Oswego foul, Mia Cence lined up for a long free kick that was fired into the Lakers' end. The ball missed a Saint and Laker, bounced off the pitch, and past the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0 in the 21st minute.
The offensive onslaught continued in the 26th minute when Zoe Rogan had the ball on the left side of the Lakers' keeper. A long pass into the box found Lilly Stone, who beat Perri Anderson and gave the Scarlet and Brown a three-goal edge as they eventually went into the half.
Early in the second half, the lead would increase to four for the home team. Sydney Keenan started the tremendous passing play finding Mochnal, who in rapid succession sent a pass into Madison King-Thurber. The midfielder found twine with her shot making it 4-0 in the 49th minute.
Darcie McDonough and the Saints' back line took care of the rest holding the Lakers to just one shot on goal the remainder of the way.
McDonough finished her second clean sheet of the week with two saves, while Anderson stopped three shots in the Oswego net. Backup goalkeeper Paytyn Crane also stopped a shot in relief of Anderson. Â
St. Lawrence dominated with a 16-9 shot advantage and 8-2 shots on goal margin. The Saints also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action next Saturday, September 21 when the team heads to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Buffalo State.
