The Scarlet and Brown scored two second-half goals, and three total, to lift the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y.
St. Lawrence improved to 4-2-0 with the win, while the Bengals fell to 3-5-0.
"That was a gritty win against a good side that showed a lot of determination," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "I'm proud of this group for illustrating how our mindset can impact our performance in a positive manner."
The Saints dominated the first half of the contest to the tune of a 15-1 shot advantage, including a 6-0 edge in the opening 14 minutes.
In the 16
th minute, the Scarlet and Brown earned a corner kick and made Buffalo State pay. Senior captain
Mia Cence would score to give St. Lawrence the early 1-0 lead.
The Saints would pour on eight more shots but weren't able to double their lead.
Both squads would get quality looks in the second half, but
Darcie McDonough and Clisson were up to the task in the woodwork.
However, in the 81
st minute the Bengals would tie the game off a goal from Kaylee Valentic, which set off an offensive display.
Less than four minutes later,
Emma Casey found
Grace Mochnal for a tally to regain the lead for the Saints. The game was then put on ice less than three minutes later when
Madison King-Thurber scored the third goal of the game to put the Bengals away.
McDonough finished with three saves in the win, while Clisson stopped 11 of the 14 shots that found the frame.
St. Lawrence held a 29-7 advantage in shot attempts, a 14-4 edge in shots on goal, and had six corners to Buffalo State's two.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action this coming Tuesday at Sandy MacAllaster Field when the team opens Liberty League play against Union at 4 p.m.
