Meredith Donahue scored in the sixth minute, but a late Union goal sent the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with the Garnet Chargers on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence moved to 4-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in Liberty League play, while Union went to 4-1-3, and 0-0-1 in league play.
The Scarlet and Brown rushed out of the gates testing Union's Maya Koster early in the contest. In the sixth minute, the team's leading scorer
Grace Mochnal played facilitator sending a ball into the Garnet Chargers box from a short corner. On the other end of the connection was Donahue, who headed the ball past Koster for the early lead.
The Saints got looks on goal in the following minutes from
Maille McMahon, Mochnal, and
Mia Cence, but were unable to find twine.
Union was able to find their footing in the 17
th minute as play evened out across the pitch.
Darcie McDonough and the Saints' defense were able to stave off the remaining shots on goal as the team went into halftime up 1-0.
St. Lawrence once again started the half strong getting four shot attempts off in the opening 11 minutes.
Madison King-Thurber was in attack mode getting two shots on frame but the Saints weren't able to add to their lead.
The Garnet Chargers' persistence finally paid off in the 79
th minute when a great through ball down the left wing to Grace Penna ended in a goal. Penna sent a cross in to Vanessa Jorgenson, who booted the ball home to tie the game at 1-1.
St. Lawrence turned up the pressure following the goal in search of the lead and had a pair of great chances. Cence was able to get a long-distance shot on goal that was stopped by Koster. The tie was secured in the 86
th minute when Donahue found herself with space down the middle of the pitch but saw her hard-hit shot deflected by Koster.
McDonough finished the game with four saves, while Koster stopped seven in the opposing goal. The Saints led 15-10 in shot attempts, 8-5 in shots on goal, and 2-0 in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action this coming weekend when the team hosts RPI at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m.
