The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team saw their four-game unbeaten streak end on Saturday afternoon falling 1-0 to RPI at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Saints fell to 4-3-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers improved to 6-1-1 and 1-0-0 in league play.
"If there's a way to describe the game of soccer in the Liberty League, then our game is a great example," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "Overall, we improved from Tuesday's game, played our game, but weren't able to make our opportunities count towards the outcome of the game."
The Scarlet and Brown came out firing in the contest earning nine of the first ten shot attempts in the contest. Three of those shots found the frame but
Meredith Donahue,
Emma Casey, and
Zoe Rogan all were turned aside to keep the game at 0-0.
The most threatening look of the bunch came from Casey, who found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The goaltender came out to challenge the effort and stopped the effort for RPI.
RPI was able to establish some footing later in the second half but only one shot found the goal and was saved by
Darcie McDonough minutes before the half.
The offense came coming for the Scarlet and Brown in the second half, this time the back line got in on the action.
Mia Cence and
Sydney Keenan both had shots that got to the RPI goal but were stopped by Sierra Skelding.
Instead, the first goal of the game would go to the Engineers in the 61
st minute. A ball was misplayed in the Saints' defensive box and fell to Rachel Borra, who found twine with her shot to put her team up 1-0.
Chloe Bourque and
Grace Mochnal were able to get shots off following the goal as the Saints searched for an equalizer but couldn't find the back of the net. Bourque, whose big kick ability showed through in the second half, had the best chance but her long-range shot was sniffed out by Skelding.
McDonough stopped three shots in the loss, while Skelding stopped all six shots that found the woodwork.
St. Lawrence outshot RPI 18-12 in shots, 6-4 in shots on goal, and 7-4 in corner kick attempts.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field this coming Wednesday when the Saints host Plattsburgh State in their penultimate non-conference game of the season. The match, which also serves as the team's Play With Pride game, will start at 4 p.m.
