Henry Brown scored a penalty kick goal for the Saints with 35 seconds remaining as the St. Lawrence Men's Soccer team tied SUNY Oneonta 1-1 in Oneonta, N.Y. Saturday afternoon.
The Saints move to 0-2-1 on the young season while the Red Dragons are now 1-0-1.
"That was a well-earned result against a top opponent!" said head coach Mike Toshack "The team displayed the character and fight required to claw back from behind! We look to regroup and prepare for a very difficult opponent in Hartwick tomorrow."
Oneonta opened up strong right out of the gates and controlled possession through most of the first 15 minutes, outshooting the Saints 5-1 early. In the 17th minute, the Red Dragons got a goal with some stellar ball movement right outside of the box, leading to an open shot by Ali Somaw who sent it to the right of a diving George Charalambous.
The Red Dragons continued to pressure after their goal but a couple of key saves by Charalambous and a few timely blocks by the defense held Oneonta to where they were going into the half.
Oneonta slowed the pace down in the second half, playing more passively with the lead, opting to control the ball deep in their zone rather than risk passes up the pitch where St. Lawrence was hunting. The Saints turned up the pressure in the second half, getting a few good chances and keeping the Red Dragons pinned back in their zone for the majority of the time.
The Scarlet and Brown had their best chance up to that point in the 68th minute as Grant Gilmer had an open shot at the top of the box that hit the crossbar and went out behind the net.
With 89 minutes elapsed and the Saints scrambling to at least tie the game, the Scarlet and Brown got their chance with a foul committed by the Red Dragons right in front of their goal to set up a penalty shot from Brown with 35 seconds left in the game. The 2023 Liberty League Rookie of the Year delivered as he sent the ball softly into the bottom right corner as Oneonta goalkeeper AJ Lucas dived in the opposite direction. The last-minute goal by Brown was enough to earn the 1-1 tie for the Saints.
Oneonta beat St. Lawrence in total shots 12-8 and shots on goal 6-3. Charalambous had five saves on the day while Gilmer and Nicholas Petrone had three and two shots respectively with each recording one shot on net.
The Saints will pay a visit to Hartwick tomorrow afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
