Saints Celebrate 50th Anniversary With Blowout Win Over Oswego State

Four goals from four different members of the St. Lawrence University field hockey team over Oswego State 4-1, as the team delivered as their storied program's alumni looked on Saturday att Hall-Leet Stadium.

Caroline Hamilton, Maddy Shaw, Charlotte Lehr and Maja Helmer all added tallies in the victory for St. Lawrence.

The win came as St. Lawrence celebrated 50 years of Saints field hockey with an alumni event featuring many prominent members of the program's past. A ceremony took place before the game began, along with a pre-game luncheon and post-game banquet.

"It was a great day to be a Saint today," said head coach Fran Grembowicz – one of just two head coaches in the 50-year history of the field hockey program, along with the great Dotty Hall. "It was so nice to honor the past of our program, and the team delivered with a solid performance. I was really pleased with the way we controlled the game from the opening, and dominated the possession game. Oswego came out hard in the second half and we handled that well. Overall, it was a fantastic day and we couldn't be happier with the outcome."

The game began with a Lakers goal. Bryleigh Beauchat got Oswego State on the board at 5:23, registering the game's opening goal on their first shot on goal. St. Lawrence, despite being down 1-0, controlled every faced of the game in the opening quarter. They outshot the Lakers 5-1 and had three corners to Oswego's zero.

This control of the game paid off in the second, when the Saints added two goals in quick succession. Caroline Hamilton tied the score with a shot on target from close range, making it 1-1 at 23:55. Then the go-ahead goal for the Scarlet and Brown came at 28:69 off the stick of sophomore Maddy Shaw.

Charlotte Lehr then made it 3-1 Saints late in the third quarter, before Maja Helmer added a beautiful goal at 57:32 to make the final 4-1 St. Lawrence.

Aside from the four who found the back of the net, Suzzane L'Hommedieu had an assist and Maggie Spire also added an assist. Elizabeth Walsh made two saves between the pipes.
The Saints return to action Saturday, September 14, where they head to the William Smith Tournament to play Lebanon Valley and Kean.
