Caroline Hamilton scored two goals, including a dramatic go-ahead goal in the dying seconds of the game, and
Cara Vredenburg made 16 saves as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team earned a conference victory in their Liberty League opener, 2-1 over Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Hamilton took a feed from
Donatella DeFazio after a penalty corner, making no mistake give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 record in Liberty League play, and a 4-4 overall record.
"I'm just so proud of our effort today," said
Fran Grembowicz, the head coach of St. Lawrence. "We picked up our defense and our passing game in the fourth quarter. We didn't let up with seconds to go in the game, which earned the corner. It was a fantastic finish for the group."
Prior to the clutch game-winner from the Saints' leading scorer, St. Lawrence had to play catch-up. After a scoreless first half, Skidmore found the back of the net at 28 seconds of the third quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence was able to help themselves with a quick response. It was Hamilton again, scoring an unassisted goal at 37:42 to make the score 1-1 and set up a defensive battle until the last moments of the game, when Hamilton scored again.
Her game-winner was not only an important goal for the Saints, but also put her in a tie for first overall in goals for the Liberty League. It was the junior's ninth of the season.
Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence 29-12, with Vredenburg coming up big on multiple occasions to keep her team in the game. Hamilton led the Saints with five shots on goal in the game.
The Saints continue their Liberty League play Saturday, October 5 against Vassar at home, before welcoming non-conference opponent Hamilton to the North Country on Wednesday, October 9.
