Saints Win Double Overtime Thriller Over Vassar, Extend Win Streak to Four

Caroline Hamilton had the game-winning goal in the final minute of double overtime to cap off the St. Lawrence University field hockey team's 3-2 comeback win over the Vassar Brewers Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

Hamilton also had an assist and led the team with five shots on goal. Maja Helmer and Maggie Spire had the other two goals for the Saints while Maddy Shaw and Suzanne L'Hommedieu had assists on the day.

The win is the fourth in a row for the Saints, who now have their first four-game win streak since they took six victories in a row Sept. 6-26, 2009. With the team's overall record at 5-4, this is their first time with five wins in a season since they won five games over the entirety of the 2022 campaign.

"We had to make some adjustments after Vassar had a strong start to the game," said Saints head coach Fran Grembowicz. "Those adjustments helped us move the ball up the field. The team played a strong second half and were good in double overtime; I'm extremely proud of our fight to finish with the win."

The Brewers got on the scoreboard first, putting one in less than five minutes into the game. A penalty corner resulted in an open shot from the striking circle from Sydney Kovel, which deflected off a couple defenders and went into the back of the Saints net to open the scoring.

Vassar also scored early in the second quarter on their first possession. Karina Hoffman found Tori Baker open just to the right of Cara Vredenburg who scored the second goal of the day for the Brewers.

Despite trailing two goals early, the Saints earned a slew of penalty corners late and capitalized at the opportunity. In the second penalty corner attempt, Suzanne L'Hommedieu got the ball at the top of the striking circle, then passed it to Maja Helmer to her left who preceded to send it into the bottom right corner of the Brewers net with 1:08 remaining on the half to halve the Vassar lead, and the Saints trailed 2-1 at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, quickly out of halftime, good ball movement from the Saints led to a 2-on-1 opportunity. A cross pass fromHamilton led to a wide open shot for Spire. There was nothing Vassar goalie Grace Wiley could do as the Saints scored with 13:52 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team was able to get much going the rest of the quarter, with each team recording only one more shot on goal the rest of the period.

The Saints had a sequence of critical saves from Vredenburg midway through the fourth quarter and Helmer had a good look with 1:30 remaining but despite the best efforts from both teams, the game went into overtime tied at 2.

In the first overtime, the Saints recorded 10 shots, four of which were on goal and also drew 10 fouls from the Brewers. Despite the Saints maintaining possession for nearly the whole of the 10 minutes, they were unable to convert as a second overtime ensued.

It wasn't until with 38 seconds left that the Saints ended the game. A pass from Maddy Shaw towards traffic right in front of the Vassar net led to Caroline Hamilton finding it and sending it past Wiley as the Saints won 3-2.

The Saints held a 11-8 shot on goal advantage and had 11 penalty corners while the Brewers had eight. Vredenburg saved six of the eight shots she faced in goal for St. Lawrence.

The Scarlet and Brown will next be in action Wednesday, October 9 in a non-conference matchup at home against Hamilton.
