Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Gubbins Adds Goal in Saints' Non-Conference Loss to No. 22 Hamilton

Lily Gubbins notched her third goal of the season, but the No. 22 nationally ranked Hamilton Continentals scored two second-half goals and the St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell 2-1 at Hall-Leet Stadium on a rainy Wednesday evening.

The loss to the formidable opponent drops the Saints' record to 5-5 overall, and snaps their four-game win streak.

"We played very well in the second and third quarter," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "Our defense played a very strong game overall. It was encouraging to see us battle and compete with the No. 22 team in the country."

St. Lawrence began the game on the defensive, as Hamilton directed the first five shots of the game toward Saints goalkeeper Elizabeth Walsh. However, the score was 0-0 at the end of the game's opening quarter.

That allowed the Saints to go on the offensive in the second. Lily Gubbins redirected a long pass from Caroline Hamilton outside the circle and into the back of the net, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead at 21:09. Maja Helmer also drew an assist on that play.

However, Hamilton would bend but not break. After surviving a St. Lawrence attack at the end of the second quarter, they came out of halftime and added their first goal of the contest off the stick of Claire Tratnyek.

In the fourth, the Continentals added a go-ahead goal, which ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Isabelle Nahon sent a hard pass in to Lilly Truchon, who stopped it on a dime and fired a quick shot past Walsh at 46:15. That made it 2-1 Hamilton – a score which that held until the end of the game.

Lily Gubbins and Charlotte Lehr led the shot totals for the Saints – they had two shots on goal each. As a team, the Saints had five shots on goal. Hamilton sent 12 shots at Walsh.

St. Lawrence has a quick turnaround this weekend, as they resume Liberty League play Saturday, October 12 with a game against RPI at 11 a.m.
