Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown Delivers the Decisive Goal in Men's Soccer's 1-0 Win at RPI

Sophomore striker Henry Brown dealt the decisive blow in the 72nd minute to give the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team a 1-0 win at RPI in their Liberty League opener in Troy, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.

St. Lawrence improved to 4-2-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Engineers fell to 3-6-0 and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League.

The Scarlet and Brown won their fourth straight game in the effort, earned their fourth consecutive clean sheet, and are now unbeaten in their last five.

"Very good start to the Liberty League with a win at RPI!" said head coach Mike Toshack "RPI is always a tough place to play as they are extremely well-coached by Adam Clinton. The team displayed a ton of grit and determination to keep their fourth clean sheet in a row. We now look forward to returning home to play Ithaca next weekend."

The Engineers, who won the playoff matchup between the two teams last season 1-0 came out hot getting the first three shots toward the goal. George Charalambous was in good form from the start turning away both efforts.

Next was the Saints' turn to return serve and they nearly cashed in. Senior Max Mogul had a great look on goal and beat Colin Such but saw his shot ring off the crossbar to keep the game even.

Brown and Nicholas Petrone also had good looks late in the first half but were turned aside.

Mogul remained in attack mode going into the second half getting three shot attempts off, the best of which was stopped in the lower 90 by Such.

The game rolled along into the 72nd minute where the game would eventually be decided. The refs awarded St. Lawrence a penalty kick putting the sensational second-year Brown on the dot. The striker cashed in on the chance to give the Scarlet and Brown the 1-0 lead late.

Brown, who surpassed his first-year goal total with his sixth goal of the year, leads the team in the category and has an assist for 13 points on the season. His six goals tie him for second in the Liberty League.

RPI had trouble engineering much offense down the stretch as the Saints' defense smothered them. They were only able to get two shots on frame that were turned aside. Kyle Osborne had the final chance at a tie on his boot in the 89th minute but his shot sailed high.

Charalambous stopped six shots in the effort and earned his fourth straight clean sheet. The senior is tied for the Liberty League lead with four shutouts, has the top save percentage at .885, and is tied atop the leaderboard with his .500 goals against average. Such was only able to come down with three saves in the effort for RPI.

Despite the pressure from the Saints, RPI held the slim 12-9 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Both squads had three corner kicks on the day.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action next Saturday, October 5th when the team hosts Ithaca in a 3 p.m. match at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
