Box Score Three goals in the third period powered the fourth-ranked Colgate Raiders to a 3-1 win over the No. 8 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team in exhibition play on Saturday afternoon for Laurentian Weekend.
"A very good test to start the season vs. Colgate," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We always like to win exhibition games, but we are very happy with our effort today up and down the lineup. Colgate has been the measuring stick for our league the last few years and this gives us a very good idea of where we are. Our returning players had great pace and our new players jumped right in and contributed right away."
After a scoreless first period,
Aly McLeod broke through at 15:53 of the second, putting the Scarlet and Brown on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Abby Hustler and
Anna Segedi assisted on the play.
Emma Pais evened the score four minutes and 37 seconds into the third period off the pass from Madeline Palumbo.
Palumbo then added her second point of the night with the game winning goal at the 17:00 minute mark.
Wells pulled
Kassidy Lawrence with 1:25 to play in the third and Colgate's Neena Brick tacked on an empty net goal with two seconds remaining for the 3-1 final.
Lawrence finished with 17 saves for the Saints, while Farah Walker and Hannah Murphy split time in goal for the Raiders. Walker finished with 16 saves and Murphy recorded 13.
St. Lawrence finished with a 30-20 shot advantage and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Colgate finished 0-1.
"What a crowd to support our team," Wells added! "SLU has done such a nice job with Laurentian weekend this year and we certainly benefited from enthusiastic fans who came to watch our game!"
St. Lawrence will head to Merrimack for a school day game against the Warriors on Friday, September 27 at 11 a.m.
