Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown's Goal Sends Men's Soccer to 1-0 Road Win at SUNY Potsdam

Sophomore striker Henry Brown scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 55th minute to send the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.

St. Lawrence won their third straight game to improve to 3-2-1, while the Bears fell to 4-2-2.

"That was a good performance from the team today, creating numerous chances to score," said head coach Mike Toshack "We are a little disappointed in not finishing more of these chances. However, the team controlled the game and dealt very well with Potsdam's long throws and wide free kicks."

The Scarlet and Brown were on the attack early in the contest registering the first four shots at the Bears' goal. The Saints were even more on point in the final six minutes of the opening 45 getting three shots on Lucas Scheil.

Nicholas Petrone and Max Mogul were the catalysts in the late barrage getting shots, but the Saints were unable to get a tally before the half.

St. Lawrence continued to hound the Potsdam defenders and nearly broke the tie twice in the opening eight minutes but first-year forward Grant Gilmer was stymied twice.

The Saints got a golden opportunity in the 55th minute when Brown was hauled down inside the Bears' box. The sophomore stepped to the line and buried his penalty kick to take the 1-0 lead.

Instead of defending, the Saints continued their relentless attack getting looks from Gilmer, Sam Pijpers, and Ryan Campbell in the following 15 minutes.

Potsdam, desperate to tie the game, gained a little traction in the latter stages of the game. The Bears got looks from Logan Bush and Kyan Tiede that sailed out right, but the next two shots were the real threats. Wiley Dawson-Beilby and Curtis Arnold both got shots on frame but were deftly shut down by George Charalambous, who didn't allow any rebounds.

Charalambous stopped three shots for his third clean sheet in a row, while Scheil came up with ten saves on 11 shots.

St. Lawrence dominated 18-6 in shots, 11-3 in shots on goal, and 5-1 in corner kicks.

The Scarlet and Brown will now turn to their Liberty League opener next weekend. On Saturday, September 28 the Saints will head to Troy, N.Y. for a 2 p.m. match against RPI.
