After nearly 80 minutes of a scoreless match, the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team saw the Red Dragons score two goals as the Saints fell 2-0 to No. 13 SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field in Cortland, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 0-2-0 with the loss, while the Dragons improved to 2-0-0.
"The team put in a good performance, especially in the first half creating some excellent scoring opportunities," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "Missed chances came back to haunt us in the final 10 minutes as Cortland broke through to score. We now recover and look forward to continuing our building towards the Liberty League."
The Scarlet and Brown came out strong in the hotly contested battle getting the first two looks on goal.
Nicholas Petrone and
Ryan Campbell both had shots but couldn't find the mark. Cortland would counter with a pair of shots from Mateo Marra which were deftly stopped by
George Charalambous.
First-year
Grant Gilmer,
Sam Pijpers, and
Henry Brown followed with wide efforts, then later in the half,
Baker Diaz was able to get a shot on Cortland's Jordan Ott that was stopped.
Charalambous would make another save in the final minutes of the half to keep the game at 0-0.
The two teams would continue to battle for chances in the first ten minutes of the second but neither team could find creases in the offensive zone. Brown had the best look early on with a shot to the far-right half of the net that was knocked away.
The Red Dragons hit a gear in the 74
th minute getting two corner kicks off on the Saints. The efforts were knocked away, but the pressure eventually led to a goal in the 80
th minute when Matt Schultz found Yasin Choukri in a scramble in front of the net to break the draw.
The Red Dragons doubled down just under four minutes later with a goal from Matt Schultz to put his team up two. Pijpers would have the final chance on goal but was unable to find twine.
Charalambous finished with seven saves in the effort, while Ott picked up four saves on the day.
Cortland had a 15-12 edge in shots, while corners were fairly even with the Dragons holding the 5-4 advantage.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Oneonta on Saturday, September 7 to take on the Red Dragons of Oneonta in a 3:30 p.m. match.
