Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mochnal and Stone Score in 2-1 Win Over SUNY Potsdam

Senior Grace Mochnal scored early in the match and was followed by Lilly Stone as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated SUNY Potsdam 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints improved to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Bears fell to 0-2-0.

It didn't take long for the scoreboard to light up in the contest with Mochnal finding the net just two minutes and 34 seconds into the game. A great pass from Emma Casey on the wing found Mochnal on the top of the Potsdam box. The senior moved to her right and fired a shot over the goalkeeper to take the early lead.

The Scarlet and Brown continued their relentless pursuit of the game's second goal taking 15 of the next 16 shots between the two teams. The team finally broke through in the 31st minute to make it a 2-0 lead. Madison King-Thurber fired a perfect pass into the box to Stone, who rifled a shot on goal. Caroline Vines stopped the first effort, but Stone buried the rebound to double the lead.

Five more shot attempts came from St. Lawrence in the final 14 minutes, but the game would go to the half at 2-0.

As the rain began to fall on the match, the pace would slow in the second half. The Bears, with just their second shot of the match cut the deficit in half. A clearing pass from the Saints ended up on the foot of Samantha Parsons, who hoisted a shot up and over the goalkeeper and in to make it 2-1.

The Saints once again were relentless in pursuit getting the next five shots off but could not find twine. A dangerous free kick for the Bears offered their last hope at a comeback in the 82nd minute but Morgan Williams' shot sailed high and left of the woodwork.

Darcie McDonough stopped the only shot she faced in the opening 45, while Zoe Davenport took over in the net in the second half of the contest. Potsdam's Vines faced 12 shots in the onslaught and came up with ten saves.

St. Lawrence held an overwhelming 29-3 edge in shot attempts and 12-2 in shots on goal. The Saints also led 9-0 in corner kick attempts.

The Scarlet and Brown will head to the road for their next game as they travel to Nazareth on Saturday, September 7 for a 3 p.m. match.
