Alfred, SUNY Morrisville Hand Saints Losses in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The St. Lawrence University volleyball team couldn't string together another victory Saturday afternoon in Morrisville, N.Y, as they dropped both contests in the SUNY Morrisville Tournament. First to Alfred by a score of 3-1, then to the host school SUNY Morrisville 3-1.

The Saints are now 1-2 on the season after emerging victorious against SUNY Poly on Friday in their first contest of the tournament.

"While the final results don't show it, we played better in our losses today than we did in our win last night," said Shelly Roiger, head coach of St. Lawrence. "I thought we showed big improvement from the Alfred match to the Morrisville match. We stopped playing scared, and our errors were aggressive ones. We will focus on executing in big moments and spend the week getting ready for two good opponents on Friday in our home opener."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 1, Alfred 3 (10-25, 10-25, 25-17, 16-25)

The Saints fell behind early in the first set, eventually dropping 25-10. St. Lawrence started stronger in the second set, splitting the first eight points to make the score 4-4, but Alfred pulled away after that and won by the same 25-10 score.

The Saints came back and took the third set 25-15 behind improved passing and several critical blocks. However, Alfred was able to pull it together after that, getting seven of the first 10 points in the fourth match en route to their nine-point victory.

Bridget Gammons led the way for St. Lawrence, producing nine kills. Kate Gardner and Araiza Acum-Santos each added three kills of their own.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 1, SUNY Morrisville 3 (25-23, 16-25, 13-25, 20-25)

In a back and forth first set, neither team could find a large lead until Morrisville established a four point margin late. However, the Scarlet and Brown scored five of the last six points, earning a comeback win, 25-23. In the second set, Morrisville took the lead at the start of the set and didn't relinquish it, winning 25-16 to put each team at one set a piece.

The Mustangs secured the third set as well, 25-13. The final set was similar to the second with Morrisville holding a small but constant lead throughout and the Saints fell 25-20.

Gammons had eight kills in this contest for a team high, with Adeline Riesenberger registering six and Acum-Santos also adding six. Kori Meissner had 16 digs, earning herself a spot on the all-tournament team after the conclusion of this game.

The Saints will next be in action on Friday as they host the North Country Classic where they will play Hartwick at 5:30 p.m., followed by Oswego State.
