Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Saints Battle to Overtime Loss Against SUNY Oneonta

Despite 12 saves by Elizabeth Walsh, the St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Oneonta Red Dragons Saturday in Utica, N.Y.

It was a back-and-forth contest that saw the Saints rally from 2-0 down to force extra time before the game ended in the second overtime frame. Despite the loss, St. Lawrence and Oneonta nearly had even shot totals; Oneonta leading the tally 15-14.

"We sae a great effort and bounce-back from yesterday," said coach Fran Grembowicz. "Our passing game and defensive play were much improved. It was good to see us get on the scoreboard."

In the first quarter, both teams showcased their defense as neither side broke the scoreless tie, each recording two shots.

Oneonta pressured the Saints heavily in the second, getting a couple of penalty corners early. The Scarlet and Brown were able to survive the first penalty corner, but the Red Dragons converted after their second with a goal by Molly Miller to break the 0-0 tie with four minutes remaining in the half. Oneonta didn't allow anything easy on their end and held St. Lawrence without a shot in the second.

The Saints got an early penalty corner at the start of the second half, but shots by Maggie Spire, Maja Helmer, and Morgan Misiaszek were all either blocked or saved by Maura Leib, in what was the Saints' best chance to even the score to that point.

Miller scored again for the Red Dragons with six minutes left in the third to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead. With two minutes left in the third, the Saints got on the board with a goal by Maddy Shaw.
Shortly after, the Saints rolled it back, marching down the field and scoring again with five seconds left. A scramble for the ball in front of the Oneonta net left an open shot for Caroline Hamilton, who found the back of the net. Lily Gubbins earned an assist on the play to make the game 2-2 going into the fourth.

In the fourth, an evenly played game took stage with both teams getting chances on either end. Oneonta registered five shots and the Saints four but neither team was able to get their third goal as the game went into overtime.

Onenota controlled the ball early into the overtime period, getting three shots in the first few minutes but Elizabeth Walsh and strong defense preserved the tie. The Saints controlled from that point on with several shots on Maura Lieb, including a good look by Maddy Shaw that went just high of the net, but Onenota was able to hang on as the Saints outshot the Red Dragons 7-3 in the first overtime.

St. Lawrence got the ball up the field quickly but an open look by Spires went wide of the net. With six minutes remaining, Oneonta got a great look with Skyler Van Wormer on the fastbreak but Walsh made a sliding save to extend the game. A few minutes later though Van Wormer found the ball loose in front of the Saints net off a penalty corner and scored, as the Saints fell 3-2 with 2:30 left in the second overtime.

Hamilton and Shaw were the two goal scorers for the Scarlet and Brown, with the two combining for seven of the 14 shots on goal. Gubbins got the lone assist and also had three shots on goal. Walsh had 12 saves on 15 shots.

The Saints will look to get back on track next Saturday in their home opener where they face Oswego State at 3 p.m.
