Madison King-Thurber and
Meredith Donahue led the offensive effort with four shots, but the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team saw two goals hit the back of their net as No. 6 University of Rochester took the win on Friday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Saints fell to 0-1-0 with the loss, while Rochester moved to 1-0-0.
"I'm proud of our group today," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "We showed discipline in our game plan and executed our style of play when possible."
The Scarlet and Brown came out quickly and aggressively getting flagged for offsides on some close runs through the Yellowjacket back line. Donahue was attacking early getting a shot on goal before sending the rebound left of the post.
St. Lawrence continued to push for lanes, but Rochester also got some looks offensively. The Yellowjackets were able to get the next four shots off in the contest, three of which were snared by
Darcie McDonough.
Rochester finally broke through in the 26th-minute when a long pass from Sydney Holmes bounced over a defender and onto the waiting foot of Claire Grover, who put her team up 1-0. The two teams combined for just two more shot attempts going into the half.
The teams traded looks on goal to begin the second half with King-Thurber getting a shot for the Saints that was stopped by Grace Kuropatkin.
The Yellowjackets found the net for the second time in the 73rd-minute when a pinballing soccer ball found Syd Coggins, who tapped in the goal on the wide side of the net to claim a two-goal advantage.
St. Lawrence got shots from
Zoe Rogan,
Lily Pleau, and King-Thurber down the stretch, but couldn't cut into the deficit.
McDonough made six saves in the Saints' net, while Kuropatkin stopped three shots for the clean sheet. Rochester held the 9-3 shots edge and led 7-3 in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the team takes on SUNY Potsdam.
